ROCHE HARBOR RESORT VILLAGE AND MARINA

On the opposite side of the island from Friday Harbor (and only 20+ minute trolley ride) lies the historic village of Roche Harbor. This area holds a special place in our hearts with our family having boated here for 50+ years. Younger generations often return year after year, making Roche Harbor truly a “family” place. Read up on the rich history of Roche Harbor which was started as a lime quarry in 1886 by John McMillian’s Tacoma and Roche Harbor Lime Company. It flourished until the 1930’s, and in 1956 was redeveloped into a resort by the Tarte Family (many of whom still live in the area). New owners took over in 1988 and have continued to operate it as a world class resort and marina, while maintaining the integrity of the village and honoring it’s history. The original Hotel de Haro built in 1886 is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Washington State. Stay in the President Roosevelt suite, or the John Wayne Suite, both of whom frequented the resort. The historic officers’ quarters sit on an expansive lawn by the tennis courts and pool and are enjoyed by vacationing families year after year. New townhomes have been erected in the village as well as an additional hotel. The newer buildings are based on traditional architecture honoring the character of the village with low impact to the environment. Stroll this quaint village, enjoy a meal in the historic restaurant, or walk the docks with an impressive array of boats and yachts of every size.
