LIME KILN POINT STATE PARK
Situated on the beautiful West Side of the island is Lime Kiln State park, known to be one of the best whale watching spots on earth. The lighthouse and interpretive center is set on a short rocky cliff overlooking the Straits of Juan de Fuca with Canada in the distance. Upon arriving to the park, breathtaking views abound. Picnic at the overlook and enjoy the sea life and wide expanse of water and the majestic Olympic mountain range. It truly is a sight like no other and exemplifies the islands natural beauty. Sit among the rocks (called terranes) made up of crystal, limestone and lava. The terrane was formed in an ancient body of water known as the Tethys Sea in Asia over hundreds of millions of years ago. The terrane moved 6,000 miles on an oceanic tetonic plate to the North American continent. As you sit among the terrane and look out over the water for whale as they pass, you can only take in the moment and be in awe of nature and the mammals. Hopefully you will have the opportunity to see either the Southern (resident) or transient orcas as they pass along the West side foraging for fish (the Southern orca) or seal (the transient orcas). It doesn’t get any better perched on ancient outcroppings, while viewing water, mountains and witnessing these magnificent creatures. We can only hope the whales will survive for future generations.
